The importance of contrasting colours

For individuals with cognitive disabilities or memory impairments, distinguishing fixtures and fittings from the wall is essential.

Utilising contrasting colours enables users to easily identify and differentiate between the various elements in a disabled toilet, such as grab bars, toilet paper holders, sinks, and mirrors. This ensures that those with cognitive challenges can navigate and interact with the space with greater ease and reduced confusion.

A #ReasonableAdjustment in these examples would be simply paining the fixtures and fittings blue or yellow. It would be unreasonable to expect a school to replace them.

Opting for contrasting fixtures and fittings in disabled toilets is more than just adhering to disability accessibility guidelines; it is a step towards creating an inclusive, accessible, and visually appealing environment.

Through enhanced visibility and improved identification, contrasting colours serve as a practical and aesthetic addition in disabled toilets.
